The Elements

Ten years ago, to run a business on the “Net” you need to have some basic things like a template website, community email, and a cell phone if you’re hip. Now our websites need encryption, our email needs to be personalized and our smartphones open our garage doors and file our taxes. I think the means of doing business got a little inflated in the IT world. To get back to basics, i believe there are only 4 things you need to run a business on the net with your own personalized domain name.

- A registrar
- Google
- WordPress
- Social Networking

Any one of the hundreds of registry agents will do. I like GKG.net for a number of reasons that I’ll get into later if you wish. Google Docs gives you email, calendar with scheduling, online doc storage, website storage and development, video hosting, traffic analytics… almost everything you need from an engineering point of view.

WordPress serves more as a marketing tool with it’s blogging features and StudioPress upgrade. WordPress is key if you are to do anything in any social network. Not only to you get to enhance your own website by making it dynamic, but you can configure WordPress to update your facebook, LinkedIn, twitter, and Yahoo! Updates pages. It’s like publishing 5 websites in one! Add in linking back to your site and you’re done.

Many people ask me which social network is best to create a profile in. For business, I say all. Create a profile that is not too in depth and provide a link to your own main website for further information. Set them all up to receive your blog feeds from your WordPress account and then you can submit to all the sites daily with just one blog.

What do you use to get your business going?
