SVr5?

With Oracle now in control of Solaris, can we expect to see SVr5 anytime soon? I believe it is going to happen as sure as the Sun is going to come up tomorrow… The new shift in OS ownership will not be the sole reason for the new revision, but definitely a contributing factor. Other factors contributing to the new rev would include “cloud computing”, mobile computing, and the technology that allows us to connect and control one with the other.

The most prevalent use of the cloud, in my opinion, is the suite of tools offer by Google commonly referred to as “Google Apps”. I understand “The Cloud” has been around and in use for several years, but not by the normal user. Google did a phenomenal job of placing the tools that everybody needs and uses every day, in a place that we can all get to it, securely, and for free.

Apple gave us the iPhone years ago, and continue to this day to reinvent themselves and their devices to enhance the convenience of using the cloud. Services like “App Store” (there’s that App word again) literally changed our way of thinking. We went from a one-size-fits-all mental block, to a made-just-for-me freedom of thought… overnight.

So how is Oracle a factor? Like most enterprise-scale IT operations, Google and Apple are managed and administered on a Solaris-based platform with the Oracle application running on top of it. As we all know, to make an app run faster, we need to make it run more efficiently. One real good way to make an app more efficient is to incorporate it directly into the OS, and make it an actual element of the OS and no longer just an application.

With Oracle in control of Solaris, I see it becoming a part of the OS without question. Why wouldn’t it? I believe just this past week that they clocked the highest processing speeds ever recorded on a Solaris box running Oracle. I’m sure they will keep the OS dynamic, have one version of the software, but have applications activated based on the license purchased, just like the App Store.

Back to SVr5… The World needs faster databases, Oracle is databases, the World needs a faster Oracle. Oracle becomes a part of the Solaris OS, Oracle runs fastest on Solaris, the World needs Solaris. Solaris Monopolizes the OS Market, thereby making Sun hardware the hardware of choice. Thereby making Oracle (new owner of Sun) “Master Blaster” of Dune Town…

The main reason SVr4 was created in the first place was because there was a threat to the UNIX world by a little man by the name of Bill Gates and his non-proprietery software called “Windows”. In order to fight off this new threat – IBM, Sun, ATT, XEROX, HPUX – worked together and came up with an OS to run across all systems, with a common desktop environment, thus SVr4 and CDE were born.

I see the same thing happening again, only with Oracle. I believe there will be an OS monopoly in the IT industry, and it will be here sooner than you think. With everything moving to 64 bit processors, the usefulness of Linux is somewhat gone. And with AIX and HPUX out of the competition, who is left to compete? Microsoft?
